Background: The Hispanic Development Council (HDC) is currently seeking an individual with the time, experience, and passion to serve as Executive Director. The HDC’s mission is to assist members of the Hispanic Latin American community in fully integrating into Canadian society and promoting social participation. We are committed to the values of diversity, inclusion, and pluralism. The HDC focuses on community capacity building and collaborates with other agencies that serve immigrants and address social justice issues. Established in 1981, the HDC is incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in Ontario. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, which is responsible for providing accountability and oversight through the Board itself and its various committees.

Position Summary: The Executive Director will be key in leading the organization to achieve its goals. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will oversee all operations, ensuring projects remain aligned with plans, timelines, and budgets. Primary duties include creating strategic plans with the Board, supporting staff and volunteers to build a positive culture, and being the main spokesperson for the organization (as required by the Board). The Executive Director will ensure compliance with funding rules, manage finances, and approve expenses within the budget. This role involves working with community partners and government organizations to enhance the organization’s presence and make a positive impact.

Key Requirements

—   Post-secondary education, ideally with a Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Public Policy, Community Development, Nonprofit Management, or related fields.
—   Bilingual in Spanish and English – fluency in speaking and writing
—   Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with the Hispanic Latin American community, with a deep awareness of cultural aspects and sensitivities.
—   In-depth understanding of settlement, social justice, and systemic challenges immigrants face, particularly those within the Hispanic Latin American population.
—   Strong leadership and team management skills, with a proven track record of fostering an inclusive and collaborative work environment.
—   Solid experience in grant writing, and financial management, with the ability to operate with sound accounting practices.
—   Data and statistical management
—   Strategic thinking and advanced problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to adapt strategies to meet evolving needs and opportunities.
—   Demonstrated ability to build, maintain, and strengthen relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including community groups, government agencies, and donors.

Job Responsibilities

1. Leadership and Management

Coordinating work and operations to ensure effective service delivery aligned with the Hispanic Development Council’s mission to empower the Hispanic community.
Reporting to the Board of Directors and funders as needed.
Developing policies to uphold ethical standards and compliance with legal requirements while supporting the organization’s mission.
Leading staff, project, and volunteer meetings to cultivate an inclusive culture, enhance communication, monitor progress, plan activities, and address conflicts.

2. Strategic Planning

Facilitate long-term planning with the Board to align the organization’s goals and initiatives with its mission of enhancing Hispanic communities’ social, economic, and cultural integration.
Advance a strategic planning process to establish long-term goals and objectives.

3. Proposal writing Financial Management

– Lead grant and proposal writing, to directly support programs benefiting Hispanic communities.

– Manage budget and financial reporting, ensuring optimal fund allocation to initiatives that enhance impact and align with the organization’s mission.

4. Stakeholder Relationships

– Establish and nurture strong relationships with stakeholders, government agencies, community organizations, and advocacy groups, that align with the Hispanic Development Council’s mission.

– Serve as the organization’s spokesperson (as required by the Board), highlighting the voices and needs of the Hispanic community in public forums and media.

6. Community Outreach and Advocacy

-Actively engage with the Hispanic community to raise awareness about the organization’s mission and programs, fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging.

– Advocate for social justice and policy change that addresses the unique challenges and aspirations of the Hispanic community, driving initiatives that influence public policy in alignment with the Council’s mission.
